Veto Premier League Round 2
Saturday 27th February
Rochedale maintained their hundred percent record in the Veto Premier League with a 5-1 drubbing of Mt Gravatt at Dittmer Park on Saturday night. New signing Steve Unsworth got himself off the mark with a hat-trick, his first goals for his new club. Unsworth was superb up top, working himself into the ground on a small and compacted Mt Gravatt pitch. The slippery conditions didn't help either defense but Unsworth was quickest to adjust to a low ball played into feet, swivelling and placing the ball into the net after only a few minutes. Only minutes later it was 2-0 when Terry Hughes scored clinically from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and in the process making 3 goals from 2 games for him personally. After the lightning start Rochedale allowed Mt Gravatt back into the game, giving up chances and eventually letting Mt Gravatt's Japanese striker steal in between Gray and Aparicio to score a real poachers effort. That's as good as it got for Mounties, with the Unsworth show just getting underway... Cody Lovell, who was instrumental throughout the match set up Rovers 3rd goal just before half time, crossing beautifully for Unsworth to drift away from his marker and loop a header over the goalkeeper and into the net, a strike that clearly delighted the Rovers marksman. Half time and a comfortable 3-1 lead for Rochedale, but they weren't finished and Unsworth completed his hattrick soon after he had one disallowed after another superb Lovell raid. Tabulo, who had been a little quiet on the night crossed superbly from the right for Unsworth to finish. It is the first set of what will hopefully be many goals for the Rochedale number 9. Rhys Hastings, against his old club battled valiantly all night and nearly had his reward with a superb run and shot from fully 35 yards which got up and over the keeper, but unfortunately for the former Mt Gravatt and 2009 gold Medal winner, the ball sailed agonisingly over the bar. The scoring wasn't finished though and Tabulo, who admittidley had a frustrating night, got on the end of a through ball and dispatched a strike across the goalkeeper with aplomb, planting the ball into the far corner. That completed the scoring despite the best efforts of Jake McLean and Keenan Duimpies. Late in the game captain Steven Carter was introduced after a 2 weeks layoff and played some nice balls, giving coach Kieran Cooper some headaches heading into Round 3 of the Veto Premier League. |
